The yellow river is the second largest in China after yangtze river, the third longest river in Asia and sixth longest in the world at the estimated length of 5,464km.

The headwater of the yellow river originated at an elevation of 4500 meters. It is however called the yellow river because huge amount of loess sediments turn the water into that color. So much of this mineral rich soil ends up in the yellow river that it can fill the riverbed and thus change the rivers course.

The average flow rate of the yellow river is 1,800 cubic meter( 63,566 cubic feet) per second. The yellow river Delta totals 8000 sauasq kilometers ( 3,090 square miles)

River yellow is commonly divided into three stages:

The upper reaches

The middle reaches

The lower reaches

The upper reaches about 3,500 km include the upland swamos and pastures of the Tibetan plateau and gorges in foothill country to the Gobi desert in inner Mongolia.
