Jesse Lingard tells Manchester United where he wants to be playing his football next season

Jesse Lingard has held a private meeting with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to tell the Manchester United manager he wishes to remain at Old Trafford

That is according to reports in The Sun who claim Lingard told the Norwegian his heart still belongs in Manchester.

Lingard’s superb loan spell and close relationship with Hammers boss David Moyes have made a return to the London Stadium look likely for the 28-year-old.

Moyes has made no secret of his desire for Lingard to remain a West Ham player next season with the manager confirming his interest in Lingard in May.

“I hope Jesse is here [next season], we would like to keep him but there is no guarantee, he is not our player,” he said

“He has done an exceptional job for us on loan and we will see where we go from there.

Lingard’s form at West Ham saw him picked for the 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2020 but the 28-year-old was omitted from Gareth Southgate’s final party.

The midfielder managed to put the disappointment behind him and support his international teammates and Declan Rice in particular during England’s opening Euro 2020 match.

This was taken as a hint by many West Ham fans that Lingard is very much Hammers bound but the report in The Sun suggests otherwise.

It claims that Lingard told Solskjaer he would prefer to remain in Manchester than return to London but he has not ruled out the possibility of linking up with Moyes at West Ham once more.

Under Moyes’ guidance, Lingard scored nine and assisted four in 16 matches and was back to playing football with a smile on his face.

During Solskjaer’s tenure, Lingard has fallen out of favour and barely featured at Old Trafford, whether the Manchester United manager has been swayed after the 28-year-old proved him wrong is yet to be seen.

The transfer window has opened and will remain so until August 31, giving West Ham plenty of time to persuade Lingard his future is better served at the London Stadium.
